Do I need to know some Japanese before I study at KCP?
No. KCP International Japanese Language School does not have a strict Japanese language requirement for admission, so you do not need to be proficient in Japanese before studying with us.
However, because our program is intensive and moves at a fast pace, we strongly recommend learning some basic Japanese before arriving in Tokyo.
How Much Japanese Should You Know Before Starting?
Ideally, students should complete at least one semester of Japanese study or arrive with a solid understanding of:
- Hiragana
- Katakana
- Basic Japanese pronunciation and reading
Knowing hiragana and katakana is particularly helpful because it allows you to spend less time learning the writing systems and more time building your vocabulary, grammar, reading, and communication skills.
If you need to learn or review the Japanese writing systems before your program, you can practice using the tools on our kana page.
Can Beginners Attend KCP?
Yes. Students with limited Japanese experience can attend KCP and be successful, especially if they are motivated and prepared for an intensive learning environment.
You do not need to arrive speaking conversational Japanese. Having a basic foundation simply makes it easier to adjust to the pace of classes and begin making the most of your immersion experience from the start.
How Can You Prepare Before Studying in Japan?
If you are new to Japanese or haven’t studied recently, focus on strengthening the fundamentals before you arrive. We recommend:
- Learning or reviewing hiragana and katakana
- Building a basic Japanese vocabulary
- Reviewing introductory grammar
- Practicing Japanese pronunciation
- Reading simple Japanese words and sentences
You don’t need to master everything before your program begins. The goal is to become comfortable enough with the basics that you are ready to build on them once classes start.

Why Is It Helpful to Prepare in Advance?
KCP’s intensive Japanese language program is designed to help students make substantial progress during their time in Japan. Students come to us with a variety of goals, from improving their everyday communication skills to preparing for university, graduate school, or professional opportunities in Japan.
A little preparation beforehand gives you a stronger starting point. Instead of spending your first weeks becoming familiar with the fundamentals, you can concentrate on developing your Japanese skills and adjusting to using the language in and outside the classroom.
You don’t need to know Japanese before studying at KCP, but the more prepared you are when you arrive, the more confidently you can begin your immersion experience.
