A Guide to Getting a Student Visa to Japan
If you’re planning to study in Japan for more than three months, you’ll need to obtain a student visa. This involves a series of steps, including filling out forms, processing applications, and visiting an embassy. Here’s a detailed guide to help you through the process.
Step 1: Choosing a School
Each Japanese language school has its unique atmosphere and course structure. KCP is a Japanese school, run by Japanese people and staffed by Japanese—so it’s steeped in the Japanese way of life. And the teachers really know their way around. What better way to immerse yourself?
Step 2: Understanding the Application Process
- Fill out the inquiry form.
- Complete the student visa application form sent to you.
- Submit all required documents.
- Once we receive all documents, we will send them to the school.
- The school will submit the visa application to the Immigration Bureau in Japan on your behalf.
- Wait 2-3 months for the Immigration Bureau to approve your visa application and issue the Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
- Once approved, the school will send you the COE.
- Take the COE and the visa application form (from the Japanese embassy), photos, and your valid passport to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your city.
- The embassy will issue your student visa, which takes 3-7 days.
- Congratulations, you now have your Japanese student visa!
Step 3: Preparing Documents for the COE
Student Application Form:
Eight Identical ID Photos (4cm x 3cm): Photos must be clear, in color, and taken within 3 months of submission. Follow passport photo guidelines strictly.
Passport Photocopy: Include a copy of the Photo/ID and Signature page. If you have visited Japan before, include previous entry and exit stamps.
Academic Documents: Provide proof of graduation, usually a diploma and official transcript.
Proof of Financial Viability: Show you can support yourself financially, with access to at least ¥2,000,000 for the first few months. Documents can include:
- Bank statements
- Income statements
- Financial aid award letters
- Scholarship award letters
- Letter of sponsorship
Ensure all documents are in Japanese or English and, if someone else is sponsoring you, include a signed sponsorship letter and their financial documents.
Step 4: After Receiving Your COE
- Make an appointment at the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate to apply for your visa.
- Prepare the following documents:
- Valid passport
- Visa application form from the Japanese embassy or consulate
- One photograph taken within the past 3 months
- Certificate of Eligibility (original and one copy)
- Certificate of Admission from the school
- Any additional documents required by the consulate
- Receive your visa and ensure you get your COE back, as you’ll need it upon landing in Japan.
By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth process in obtaining your student visa and embarking on your educational journey in Japan.
