Winter and Spring 2020 at KCP

KCP is taking the threat of the novel coronavirus very seriously, and our top priority is the safety of our students, teachers, and staff.

Students attending our Winter program are currently taking online classes, which will last until the end of this term (3 weeks). This was initiated through a directive by the Japanese government regarding schools and suggested best practices. KCP has informed Winter term students they can return home if they want and complete their course work through our online classroom and video sharing technologies.

However, it is important to note that KCP closely follows the directives of the Japanese government to prevent or reduce the widespread outbreak. It is possible for students to take part of their classes at their lodging via online, as is the possibility that our Culture class will not be offered so as not to expose our students to large, crowded tourist spots.

These inconveniences, while having the best intentions for the safety of our students, are also not desirable and students may want to rethink their participation next term. There will be no refunds after the program begins, unless the school closes its doors, cancels Spring (which is not currently the plan), or the US State Department issues a travel warning level 4 (currently, it is level 2, use extra caution). We will do our best to make you experience a rewarding one, with as many exciting opportunities for discovery as we can provide, keeping in mind that your health and safety remain our top priority.

Take note that the mortality rate is extremely low for healthy people under 30 years old. Most susceptible are the frail and elderly with ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and respiratory disease. So while most students who do contract the virus may not experience anything serious, those with respiratory conditions, heart issues, or lower immune systems may want to consider cancelling or deferring their participation.

KCP has set up a blog category, Current Events, outlining the development of the virus, and KCP’s response. We would encourage you to read these blog posts and keep an eye on them going forward. Please do your own research and analysis of your health condition and then make a decision that you feel safe and secure pursuing.
