Japan as a Budget Traveler’s Destination

Japan is increasing becoming a popular destination for many travelers. Over the recent years, the Japanese government has been working on measures to make Japan a more tourist friendly place to visit. As a result, the country is seeing a budget responsive travel destination with more foreign languages being spoken, cheaper transportation and more relaxed visa requirements. Between the months of January to September of 2019, Japan has welcomed over 24 million tourists and expect about 6 million more by the end of December. This makes Japan a dream come true place for any budget conscious student while studying in the country. Check out some reasons why Japan is a budget traveler’s dream place to explore:

Food is delicious and affordable!

Japan has many places to get really good food on the cheap. A great place to begin with is a depachika, a term for department store basements. You can find a variety of food in a depachika. Numerous food selections from all around the globe satisfy your every food craving. The vast array of food choices includes the usual Japanese fare such as pre-prepared bento boxes, sushi, tempura, and ramen. If you’re hankering for a sandwich, you can choose from an assortment of cold cut meats and cheeses at the delicatessen section.

There’s also Japanese street food. Fukuoka Street in Fukuoka Prefecture is considered Japan’s street food mecca. Over 150 food stalls riddle the area close to the water–a perfect place to enjoy all the delicious food.

Ryokan

Accommodations are inexpensive

There are many hotels with price ranges that will surely fit your budget. Airbnb is another popular option as well as capsule hotels which have always been a quintessential experience for anyone travelling to Japan.  Staying at a ryokan when in Japan would however be the best way to immerse yourself in the Japanese culture.

A ryokan is a type of traditional Japanese inn that usually features tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and visitors even wear a yukata, traditional Japanese clothing.

Japan is one of the safest places in the world

Japan is ranked as one of the safest countries in the world. The country has an incredibly low crime rate. Japan also reports “the second-lowest homicide rate after Iceland and the second-lowest assault rate after Canada.” Japan is proud of being such a safe place that children can walk home and even go to shopping malls without any adult supervision, women can walk dark back alleys and empty streets alone, people can leave their bags unattended without fear of their things being stolen, and cars can be left running without fear of them being driven away. Japan’s crime rate may be one of the lowest in the world, but it still isn’t 100% safe. It is still best to exercise caution especially when you are a foreigner in a new country.
