Homestay

A homestay can be one of the most rewarding aspects of time spent in Japan. Living with a Japanese family provides daily opportunities to practice the Japanese language and experience family traditions. Many students develop close relationships with their host families as they eagerly participate in contemporary Japanese family life. Students can also practice what they have learned in class, discuss the Japanese culture, and sample traditional Japanese cuisine at dinner. Homestay assignments are arranged in Japan, based on information provided by the student. Breakfasts and dinners are included in the program cost.

There are significant advantages to living with a host family for students who are open-minded, genuinely interested in becoming a member of the family, and willing to compromise their schedules slightly. However, some students may find this lifestyle distinctively disadvantageous. Homestays are not recommended for very independent students who prefer to experience Japan outside of a home lifestyle. Homestay families will want to spend time with students, especially on weekends. They may expect a student to become a member of the family by helping out around the house. Some families may also impose a curfew.

KCP tries to find families that do not speak English, but this is not always possible. English is a required element of curriculum from junior high through high school. Often, students continue their study of English throughout college. Host families are told about the intensity of the Japanese language course and that they should speak Japanese as often as possible, even if they have some English ability. You will get far more out of the language program if you also discipline yourself and speak as often as possible with your hosts in Japanese.
