FAQ » After KCP

Would taking Japanese at KCP prepare me to be a Japanese teacher in the U.S.?

Absolutely! Our program is offered at all levels of instruction. If your goal is to develop complete proficiency, our program is right for you. Intensive firsthand experience in Japan will help you greatly in teaching Japanese in the U.S.

Does KCP provide any kind of networking opportunity with businesses in Tokyo?

We sometimes invite former students who are successfully employed in Japan as full-time workers to share their experience and job-hunting strategies with our current students. But by far, the best options are to join or participate in the many expat clubs and organizations within Tokyo. Tokyo is teeming with opportunities for networking; you just have to make time to participate. The American Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo is a good example of an organization that offers student discounts.

I am interested in the JET program. How have KCP alums succeeded in securing those jobs?

Many KCP alums have participated in the JET program, or returned to Japan to teach English at an English conversation school. Having this extra “edge” by knowing some Japanese will help you adjust better to living a successful life in Japan. The language is so important to adjustment, and will be instrumental to you when you teach English to Japanese folks.

What have KCP alumni gone on to do with their Japanese?

Some KCP alumni work for Japanese companies, or for American companies that do business with Japanese or in the Japanese market. Other alumni work in Japan through the JET program or become English teachers at English conversation schools or public schools in Japan. One student has extended his reach in Asia to South Korea, where he is on a Fullbright program. His knowledge of Japanese is greatly accelerating his learning of Korean. Another student, a photographer, has taken many professional photos of life in Japan. Some students have used the Japanese they learn for Japan studies, or becoming Japanese language teachers. Another student has chosen to combine her Japanese language and animé to become a film illustrator. Others use Japanese to follow their favorite animé or manga, to keep in touch with Japanese friends or friends of other nationalities they met while at KCP, or to enjoy Japanese movies and television shows.
